This is perfect for Active Distance Learning!
I LOVE THE OLYMPICS! I was super bummed to find out that they were delaying the Olympics this year. I look forward to the Olympics every 2 years and I really don't have a preference of summer or winter Olympics. I love the opening ceremonies and seeing all the nations parade in with their flags, cheering for all the events and Olympians, and hearing all about the backstories. I love it all!
Alphabet Olympics is something I started years ago with my preschool class. We were doing Letter of the Week back then (forgive me, I didn't know better), and Alphabet Olympics were our celebration for learning all of our letters. In more recent years, I have used Alphabet Olympics for Field Day activities that are appropriate for preschool. I have an old product on TPT that was more fitting to an outdoor Field Day, but this year it became clear that we weren't going to do our regular outdoor field day activities together.
I set out to make a product that could be completely done on Zoom, or whatever distance learning program your school uses. I also wanted to make sure that all the activities could be done inside or outside. My last product included some items that most families wouldn't have at home, but this one is completely accessible for all families. Hopefully, we won't be doing distance learning next year so I also included printable versions (color and black and white). While I love color clip art, I know that there are limits to color printing, especially at schools. You can use some Astrobrites paper and print in black and white to make them exciting, as well.
I also included certificates and medals so you can present them at your closing ceremonies.
Check it out in my TPT store here.
Some other ideas for ways you can use Alphabet Olympics, if you maybe you aren't into using it as field day activities (virtual or at school):
Inside recess- if you are prone to wet or cold weather, chances are you'll be inside for recess several times a year. The last thing you want, is to be without a plan and activities to keep them busy. Also, gross motor time is SOOOO important for students. While I do prefer free choice gross motor movement, it's not always possible for inside recess. Go Noodle and Cosmic Kids Yoga are great options, as well, but sometimes you need to mix it up to keep them on their toes. I always hated inside recess because it seemed like the students never could get enough energy out inside as they do outside, which always made nap time even more difficult. You could really make these exercises in Alphabet Olympics last as long as you want, and make them as hard as you would like. I have done it 2x now and broke a sweat each time, but I'm also super out of shape.
Brain Breaks: Pick and word or name and spell it with the exercises from each letter. If you have a Super Student / Star Student, spell their name, or your helper for the day. Or if you are learning about a specific theme or study, spell a word from there with the the exercise. It would be even better if you have the students come up with a word, but be careful as they might think of words like "poop"
Morning Stretches: In my classroom we always did morning stretches as part of our morning meeting. I say that we need to wake up our bodies and our minds so we can be ready for the day. Often I had some yoga cards, or other gross motor activities, for our stretching helper to pick from, but if you printed these 4 to a page they would be perfect for this activity as well.
However you choose to use them, and whether or not you are as Olympics obsessed as I am, I hope you and your students enjoy them and get a good workout in.
